Space Waste Technologies Proposal For Disposal of Nuclear Waste

Space Waste Technology, SWT, has been formed specifically for the purpose of disposing of the known 138 million pounds nuclear waste materials. The concept is to build a facility which will be completely self contained and provide the receipt, interim storage and disposal of these waste streams off of the planet. SWT will utilize the latest light gas guns to shoot the waste into space towards the Sun.

The new light gas gun technology being utilized for this purpose is unlike previously used technologies, because it does not use an explosive charge to compress Helium to high pressures. This technology utilizes specifically designed hydraulic pistons to compress the Helium to 413.7 MPa, 60,000 psi. The release of this high pressure gas occurs rapidly as the burst plate is ruptured and the projectile containing the nuclear waste materials is shot into space. The projectile will be shot at speeds just over 8.5 km/sec and reach the 160km level in just over 18 sec.

Each projectile will contain 2kg of nuclear waste material which will be housed within a Silicon Carbide capsule. Each of these capsules will be built on site, filled by robotic systems, assembled and placed into a loading containers. These containers will be transported to the shooting zone where a robotic system will load each gun with a projectile and a burst plate. Each gun will be fired at a rate of just over 1.6 rounds per minute, 16 hours each day, 5 day a week. Over 1.1 million pounds will be shot into space each month

At this particular time it is estimated that the cost of eliminating this waste materials will be under $25.00 per pound. This is no longer storage of materials which is perceived as a long term environmental liability, it is the removal of this material from the planet. It is cost effective, with no known long term liabilities.

Sequence of Events:

This process, which never been done before, will require some basic design criteria to be establish. The capsules will have to be designed constructed and tested to provide the durability necessary to survive the launching process. This is a rapid launching system, which shoots this projectile from zero to Mach 27 in less than 1/100^th of a second with forces up to 867 G. The Silicon Carbide capsule is strong enough to handle not only these forces, but also the launch temperatures resulting from air friction moving across the skin of the capsule. Silicon Carbide has temperature limits of 2700°C so the temperatures are not the factor but the G forces on the capsule are.

A computer model and simulation, a preliminary design has already been done, will be performed first on the design of the capsule and once the final design has been completed several capsules will be built. Simultaneously with design of the capsule will be the fabrication of the first light gas gun, robotics for loading the gun, and software development. The development of the capsule and the fabrication of the gun should coincide with one another and test shots will be performed. If designs are correct and all shots are successful, and operating design limits have been established, by test, final fabrication and manufacturing areas will be built. If additional design and testing is needed then additional work will be done, and once those test are completed the manufacturing area will be designed and constructed.

A confidence factor must be establish for this technology and disposal method so it is then planned to construct 1000 capsules which are the size, shape, and weight of the capsule and filled with inert materials. These rounds will be shot into space and by monitoring the speed at which the capsule leaves the gun a calculated distance can be made.

Material Handling:

Storage of this waste material, at the power plants varies so material handling will need to be research. Various methods of handling the materials will need to be develop to comply with regulator and personnel safety. Also, guidelines for various strengths of waste will have to be identified and the methodology and SOP’s will have to be developed for each type. It is understood that the NRC will provide the guidelines and from those our procedures will be derived. There is a considerable amount of unknowns at this time and depending on the impact that the material handling conditions impose will also impact the cost.

A team will be established to develop the appropriate logistics to receive, store, move, and load the capsules. A chain of custody system will follow NRC and EPA requirement, along with any other regulatory agency requirements.

The intent of this program will be to utilize robotic technology and computerized material handling equipment to move to storage, prepare the materials for filling the capsules, fill the capsules, and finally load the guns. Not only will these materials be handled by this type of technology, but will be monitored by specifically trained operators in each respective area.

Site Safety:

Site safety for employee and material handling is the number one concern with this project. All efforts will be made to maintain the safest site, environmentally sound practices, and the proper disposal of these materials.

Site Location:

The location of the site will most likely be determined by regulatory agencies. A remote location is desired due to the work being done and the noise being generated. Eight guns will be firing constantly for 16 hours per day. Each time one of the guns are fired they each generate 130 dB. Power will not necessarily be in the area, because power will be produced on the site using solar pond technology. It is anticipated that somewhere within the southwest the site can be located. As a result the solar values are adequate for the use of this technology. This technology will be used because of the ability to produce power that is necessary for plant operation and eliminates the cost associated with bring power into a remote location.

A small amount of water will be needed for cooling in the production of power. A closed loop system can be used, however, there will generally be needed some makeup water for the system. Water will also be needed for fire protection and showers for employee.

Manufacturing Components:

Due to the volume of items necessary to perform this task a manufacturing area will be built, which is separate from the waste materials. Each day over 13,000 rounds will be shot into space. As a result of this one can see we will need a considerable number of burst plates, capsule bodies and nose tips, and waste sleeves which will hold the waste within the capsule.

Manufacturing the burst plate will require 500 4’ x 8’ sheets of stainless steel each month. They will be machined by CNC milling and cut by CNC water jet machines. One operator will be able to operate two of these machines simultaneously.

Additional machining will be required to produce replacement gun parts. These guns are made of 4340 steel to handle the pressures generated for not only the breech head, which operates at 15000 psi hydraulic oil, but the breech chamber itself is a highly machined, high quality produced part which has to meet specific requirements to generate 60,000 psi Helium. A punch will need to be fabricated, which is used to penetrate the burst plate for rapid gas release.

Under these operating conditions it has not be determined the number of times that they can be used before they have to be replaced. Part of the study, when firing the 1000 rounds of simulated capsules, will be to identify the life of each gun part. From this final cost will also be assessed.

Plastic extrusion machines will be used on site to produce the plastic sleeves use to contain the pellet size waste materials which will be placed inside of the Silicon Carbide capsule.

The Silicon Carbide capsule production has not been identified at this time. Various production techniques have been identified, however, until the final design has been determined efforts will not be made in this area.

Dreams and Politics –an exhibition of drawings and paintings by Daniel C. Boyer, opens at Washington Gallery.

Duluth, MN – Daniel C. Boyer, an artist from Houghton, Michigan, will have an opening of his solo exhibition Dreams and Politics at Washington Gallery on Friday, April 6 from 6-9pm. The exhibit includes drawings and paintings in a variety of media.

Boyer's work is primarily influenced by surrealism and various methods developed by the surrealists. "I start at many points but I think the end point is always a horizon over which lie more imaginative possibilities," says Boyer. His artwork reflects nightmare and reverie, and plays over a wide range of political history, from that of the Reformation to the Soviet Union and beyond. Within Boyer's abstract body of work he often uses Diet Coke to dilute his paints. "I am attracted by the mysteriously dark tinting and patterning and sedimenting," says Boyer.

"I am influenced by the characters from politics and political history, whether their legacy is positive or negative," says Boyer. The exhibit title, Dreams and Politics, reflects the fantasy, humor, misery and even horror when these characters are confronted by compromise, and the effects of accommodation to dictatorship.

Dreams and Politics will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1-5pm, or by appointment, from April 7 through the 15th. The Washington Gallery is located in the former Washington Junior High School at 315 North Lake Avenue in Duluth.

Rhine-Rhône high-speed line opens

The new high speed lines on the TGV Rhine-Rhône network are now open creating faster journey times within France and onwards to Switzerland and Germany.

TGV high speed trains will transport around 12 million passengers on the French, Swiss and German rail networks taking rail travellers to important cities and regions, without having to go through Paris.

Journey times have been cut bringing Europe closer together and increasing the reach of the TGV.

The Rhine-Rhône line consolidates France's strength as a hub for rail travel in Europe, and was cited by the European Union as a priority connection for the European transport network, when work began back in 2006.

The 2,312 billion Euro project was financed by 20 partners including the French State, the European Union, Switzerland, the Burgundy region, Franche-Comté, Alsace and the Railroad network of France.

The high speed lines on the Rhine-Rhône network include an eastern branch between Dijon (Burgundy) and Mulhouse (Alsace) via two new stations: Belfort-Montbeliard and Bescancon Franche-Comte, which are regions well worth exploring.

The other high speed sections are a spur towards the Rhône-Alpes region and a southern line between Paris and Lyon and onwards to the Mediterranean.

Union Membership Increasing as NLRB Decisions Favor Organizing Activities to Detriment of Employers

The new NLRB election rules shorten the timeframe employers may educate employees about their right not to join a union and delay the determination of who is or is not a supervisor until after the union election is held causing chaos for employers.

Attorney Cliff Hammond has been on both sides of the table union-wise and he says the scales are tipping in favor of unions these days as the energized National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) continues to implement rules benefiting unions while negatively affecting non-unionized and unionized employers alike. With the news last week from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that private sector union membership is increasing again after losing 1.4 million members in 2009 and 2010, Hammond's observations are timely.

Immediately prior to joining Detroit-based employment law firm Nemeth Burwell, P.C., which represents employers exclusively in labor and employment law, Hammond worked as an attorney for the largest union local in Michigan (SEIU Local 79), where he negotiated union contracts and arbitrated over 300 labor disputes. He says that experience has given him insights into spotting trends that can adversely impact employers. His particular frustration now is the NLRB's new election rules.

The new election rules shorten the time period during which an employer may educate its employees about their right not to join a union. The new rules also delay the determination of who is or is not a supervisor until after the union election is held. This causes controversy and chaos for the employer as to who is or is not a supervisor, who is or is not properly in the bargaining unit and who can and cannot be confided in during a union election.

When Gnosis first began in 2007, it was called a multimedia communications firm because it offered services from piano instruction, to audio editing and production, to SEO. As a result, the firm's owner, Eric Bryant, had a hard time coming up with a name that encapsulated all of these varied services.

"I'm just going to admit it: I didn't know what I was doing when I first began," said Eric Bryant, director, laughing. "To be honest, Gnosis Arts was just a hobby, a 'side hustle', as my Twitter pal, and skilled business coach, Pam Slim, calls it. I didn't know anything about branding, or marketing, or public relations. I was just chasing a passion in my spare time."

That passion grew into a viable, solvent business in 2008-2009. Gnosis Arts Multimedia Communications LLC was born, and it became a state-registered Limited Liability Company, complete with staff, an operating agreement, a business plan - even an officer (Eric's wife, Barbara Bryant).

"After I got serious about my hobby, I turned it into a full-fledged business in 2008, " Eric explained. "But it wasn't easy. We went through quite a few iterations. For a while we tried to make SEO (Search Engine Optimization) our main specialty. But the market was just too fat with big players. Then I went a more esoteric route, and tried to make philosophical consulting our specialty. Hence, the 'communications' part of the name. But this also never really took off, and wound up confusing our branding more than helping it.

"Later, we hit the jackpot - or so I thought - by getting into the Wikipedia writing business. This proved quite lucrative," Eric explained. "We made a lot of money and had our most profitable seasons in 2009-2010 writing and editing Wikipedia articles for clients. We did so well that I was able to hire two new staff persons to take over this wing of the business, full-time."

"Momma Said There'd Be Days Like This..."
But this soon landed the firm in hot water. Wikipedia has had a tenuous, not-so-amicable relationship with public relations and marketing firms over the years, and they've defined paid editing as pretty much a cardinal sin.

"So, we had to shut the Wikipedia editing business down in 2010," Eric lamented.

After mounting conflicts of interest between the firm and Wikipedia officials, Gnosis Arts went through a period that can really only be described as disarray. Eric had to let go of the two Wikipedia staff. One of the staff he terminated became disgruntled and began trying to sabotage the business and stealing clients. Eric then had to enlist the aid of lawyers to defend company assets. He then had to re-conceive the entire business model.

"The whole ordeal was really a mess. We had to almost totally redefine who we were," Eric said. "It was tough. There was infighting all the time. Everybody was kind of lost. Staff were doubting my decision to close down the Wikipedia business. They were even doubting my leadership ability. There were dark periods when I felt like a complete and utter failure, like just throwing in the towel and calling it quits. I had to redefine who we were, I had to completely change around service offerings. It was a pretty monumental task."

Could We Recover?
But the firm was able to recover.

"We started to dig really deep into the market research," said Tiffany Williams-Jallow, marketing/PR manager. "After literally weeks of hardcore market research, we discovered that the Internet/Digital PR niche was a possibility. It had beatable competition. We'd already gotten a jumpstart in it, and that's where we were seeing the most attraction to our services. There were only a few high-quality players, along with a plethora of cheap flacks," Williams-Jallow explained.

"I said to myself, 'This is doable. This might work. We might have found our niche'," Eric said.

So, the firm then began to re-purpose itself. It built a brand new newsroom which included a semi-automated, free press release submission service in late 2010. In early 2011, it added mobile SMS applications to the roster. Later that year, it added social media services to its offerings, including a tweetchat curation wiki and a homegrown social listening tool for Twitter. Additional services included a High Visibility Press Release distribution service, a QR code press release service, and an improving of the firm's SEO Press Release service.

The firm also got into the electronic publishing market, republishing its previously published ebooks to the Amazon Kindle marketplace.

"Kindle publishing has not brought in nearly the revenue that Wikipedia editing did," Barbara explained. "But it has brought in some and it looks like definitely a market segment that we can build on. Plus, Amazon Kindle just makes sense for PR; it opens up a whole new world of public relations possibilities, if you really think about it."

Gnosis has also really stepped up its game in the free press release market.

"We built a free press release service that rivals the best of them out there. It has become credible enough that Google News has included it in its search results, which is no small feat," Williams-Jallow explained. "We then built add-on services to the free press release, such as Tweet the Release, Add YouTube Video, Post to Linkedin News, and Make Sticky options. These have also been well-received by our customers."

New Partnerships
A big component of the reorganization of Gnosis Arts was establishing key partnerships with other organizations and businesses.

"We've partnered with Cambrian College in Ontario, Canada, which is the second university along with Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania that we've partnered with to grow our internship program," Barbara said. "We've brought our internship program to them, and the director of PR studies there, Dr. Nancy Griffin, has really been great to work with. She's been a wonderful catalyst for our growth."

In fall 2011 the firm partnered with PRNewswire - the nation's leading newswire service - to offer its customers a guaranteed media placement package that surpassed the competition.

"The new media placement package, quite frankly, puts our press release distribution services on the top of the heap," Williams-Jallow said. "We are better than the long list of mediocre 'press release factories' out there that just publish your press release with no effect. We get results. We're new and improved, real contenders in the press release distribution marketplace now."

Igniting Customer Loyalty
"We've also started recognizing businesses who have become sort of brand evangelists on Twitter and Facebook," Barbara said. "We created a sort of informal 'Brand Ambassadors' recognition where we publish a photo and information about their business on our company website. We began seeing these business owners as not just acquaintances, but as strategic partners."

Along with the brand ambassadors program, Gnosis created a Loyalty Rewards program to reward its most loyal customers. The loyalty program has produced significant results. According to Gnosis staff, 90 percent of its current client base is now composed of repeat customers, some of whom have been doing business with the firm for over two years.

"Depression lifted! I'd say we must be doing something right!" Eric said. "You just keep plugging away at it and you never give up, and eventually you can get there."

"A Rose by any Other Name ..."
All these changes have proved to be positive steps in the right direction for the firm. But this metamorphosis required a new name, new branding initiatives, and renewed vision, to go along with it.

"For a while now, I've wanted to call us 'Gnosis Media Group'," Eric said. Unfortunately, there was already a firm in Florida with the same name (sigh). Make matters worse, they were also a PR firm! So, I had given up on the idea that we'd ever be able to use this name. But something told me to research it a little further. When I did, I found that that Florida company had failed to renew its business name, and the name had been inactive for quite some time."

Eric also found that, since LLCs are creatures of the state, it is possible for two LLCs - in two different states - to have the same name legally. So, he registered the name with the State of New Jersey, and they accepted his request. Gnosis Media Group was now born.

"Now it's official," Barbara said. "We are legally 'Gnosis Media Group'. This is so awesome because now our name is shorter and more succinct. It's easier to remember, which is also good for branding. It still captures what we do and who we are. It works so much better than the former name."

Even though the firm still owns "Gnosis Arts Multimedia Communications LLC", it now can do business as "Gnosis Media Group".

"It's like changing from a caterpillar to a butterfly overnight, " Williams-Jallow said. "I like this new name better, personally. We are so different now than when I first started working for the firm. We have revised our vision statements, and we've even added a code of ethics section on our website.

We've also added an informational section that explains why we are better than the myriad press release factories out there. All these changes have served to give us a clearer identity in the mind of the public."

Just when you thought it wasn't possible for college costs to go up even more, guess what, they just keep rising. According to the College Board, tuition and fees in 2012 for in-state students at public four-year colleges will exceed $8,200 -- and that number will top $12,500 for out-of-state students. What's more, private nonprofit four-year colleges charge, on average, $28,500 per year in tuition and fees alone. On top of that, all students and families have to figure in room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses, transportation and more.   So, what's a student do?   Experts agree there are five relatively painless ways college students can stretch their budget in 2012 and still have a great experience at school.

1. Take Charge of Your Personal Financial Life: Make a monthly budget and stick to it. It seems obvious, but students should only purchase what they can afford. First, seek to eliminate all credit card debt. With interest payments hovering in the range of 20% range, that's a very expensive way to pay off your debt. Second, students should seek out financial institutions that offer free checking and savings accounts and make certain they do not incur fees for returned checks due to insufficient funds. Third, explore every avenue possible for financial aid, grants and scholarships. Many go untapped each year!

The Environment Action Association (EAA) is proud to announce our first annual environmental video contest "The Greener me, the Better us." EAA invites you to submit a funny, creative video portraying how each of us can do to reduce our environmental impact and what we can do to protect Mother Earth

The East Hampton Library is pleased to announce a donation of $250,000 from the Alec Baldwin Foundation to support the construction of the Library's new Children's Addition.

Mr. Baldwin's donation originates from the proceeds of his advertising campaign for Capital One Bank's Venture Rewards credit card. He has earmarked all of the proceeds from the promotion to the funding of arts and cultural organizations.

An active supporter of the East Hampton Library, Mr. Baldwin serves as Honorary Co-Chair of the East Hampton Library's Children's Addition Committee and is the Co-Founding Chair of the library's popular annual Authors Night fundraising event.

The new addition, designed by noted architect Robert A.M Stern, will add more than 2,000 square feet to the existing Children's Room, allowing for the addition of 10,000 more children's books, new computers, seating, and other age-appropriate improvements. The new addition will also allow for the installation of a second elevator, making the entire library handicapped accessible, and provide 16 new parking spaces.

A brother's death serves as catalyst for book

(Pittsburgh, PA.) - Mary Elizabeth Robinson, author of Tomorrow's Promise faced many devastating losses. She lost her father, mother, and brother to cancer.

As a twelve year old, Robinson witnessed the destructive power of breast cancer on her mother's life. But her brother's death in 2000 from pancreatic cancer became the catalyst that inspired her to write her book.

"I couldn't keep it to myself. It needed to be shared with anyone who has ever lost a loved one, with anyone who has ever struggled with their faith and with anyone who has ever lost a mother, or a father or a brother. My story embraces many messages, which could change reader's lives," she said.

All books have the potential to address issues affecting today's society. Some of the themes woven through Robinson's narrative include the interplay between journeying through the grief process, survival, the challenge to individual faith, and family secrets.

Robinson also reveals the sexual abuse endured by her brother as a child, and its disclosure a month before his death.

"Sexual abuse is an outrageous fact in our lives. My brother lived through it and was able to forgive his molester. He taught me about forgiveness and not to hold onto the bitterness," she said.

In terms of religious faith, Robinson admits she doesn't have all the answers, but believes her story of navigating through her tragic loss may bring hope to readers walking a similar path.

The BlueBell Store has been operating and serving the small rural town of Bluebell for over 100 years.

It has been remodeled and added to at least half a dozen times, however, when Pelican Station Inc. took over the store in 2009, it saw perhaps its most visible transformation with the complete rearrange of the store, counter build outs, and new floors.

Pelican Station Inc put the burden of managing the property on one of its partners from their home office, but since operations have grown and sales are up, they are now putting it back under the management of the Roosevelt office, and will be recording earnings and sales under the Pelican Station umbrella as oppose to as a separate entity.

President of Business development, Anthony Zufelt, says that this will allow for optimal customer service and ultimately customer satisfaction as the Roosevelt office has more inventory control methods and the likes in place.

The first of it's kind in Ireland a twice weekly news service for those with disabilities on Life Fm 93.1 or www.lifefm.ie

The Father of sons with Autism is trying to make a difference on the airwaves for all people with Disabilities.

The dream has finally become a reality for Eric Isherwood, Volunteer presenter of the only dedicated Disability Radio News in Ireland "Disability Access News" on Cork's Life Fm 93.1 radio show focusing on disabilities twice daily every Tuesday and Thursday at 3.30pm and 8pm. For the past 25 years, both myself and wife Veronica have been trying in raising awareness for autism and for families and children of special needs but wanted to reach more people with disabilities, families and professionals.

What we found out is that when many parents find out their child has a disability or suspect they have one, the parents are unaware of their rights and are looking around for support. While the parent struggles with a myriad of challenges medically, financially and emotionally, they are not prepared to effectively advocate for their child's disability when they don't know their rights.

For the last 25 five years we have put our sons in the spotlight not an easy decision to make but we had no choice as we were trying to get our sons to the Boston Higashi School USA as there was no such thing as Education at that time for those Children with special needs and the media was our only avenue and they were supportive both locally,nationally and Internationally.

By going down this route it made Colm and Eric a household name in the mid 90s and brought Hugh support from the general public and awareness of Autism and Disabilities. For the last few years we have tried to give support to families who contact us online on Facebook or Twitter or by word of mouth, volunteering our time to help families who may be lost and are looking for answers and Support.

This year 2011, I approached Brian Daly, Station manager of Life FM 93. about the idea of contributing as a volunteer on the station by doing an information slot on the Disability Sector.He was immediately interested and during September I did an Information Piece on Anna Daly's "On the Level" Show on Autism,MS, Cystic Fibrosis, Down Syndrome The live radio show got great feedback. (At all times we advocated that parents first access point if they suspect their child has a disability is there local GP.) I then realized the power which radio had to reach so many.

I always had a passion for both radio and to bring more awareness effecting all those with Disabilities. I would like to one day do my own show and perhaps be spokesperson for all with disabilities as well as advocates for parents and children and adults. I worked with other parents, professionals in March of this year doing a Conference on Autism at UCC "Let's Connect"

I am delighted to be doing "Disability Access News" twice weekly and I would hope that by hosting this weekly radio show that it would benefit all people with disabilities, families, and professionals in the community. "I hope to make a difference where I can by Volunteering. I am trying to do what I can for people with disabilities, with this news service along with social media Like Facebook https://www.facebook.com/autisminnocentoutcasts and Twitter.

I have been asked by the Station to work on putting together a series of one hour programmes on Disabilities and would love to hear from parents,people with all Disabilities,professionals,charities,organisations who would like to take part in the series by 16th of October 2011 The series if we get enough people to come on board will be named Extraordinary People Extraordinary Lifestyles...Turning Challenge into Victory.

I am not a trained broadcaster but my passion to provide information, education and disability awareness to listeners each week. The radio news shows I hope will provides news items most people don't hear of in the media.

The show can be heard from Cork on Life Fm 93.1 and online, making the radio show more accessible to those on the Internet. The most important reason for "Disability Access News" , is to educate/inform people who are affected by disabilities, their families and friends, professionals and the general community. In tandem with the news I will continue to do a monthly slot with the Anna daly show "On the level" on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 12.30 pm

Future topics include Dyslexia, Bipolar Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disorders, Epilepsy, ADHD, Alzheimer's, Diet and vitamin interventions, Sensory Integration, Reflexology,Entitlements and many other. I hope listeners will become better educated about disabilities and for all to realize that "people with disabilities have a voice also in society.
